Scooter is a special pup to me.
When I was little, probably about 9 years old, I took swimming lessons. My teacher (I won't use her real name, so for blog purposes her name will be "Claire") "Claire" was in veterinary school, and fostered dogs on the side. Well she was about to head off to another school, and could not take to dog she was fostering with her. His name was Scooter and he was a little Jack Russell with a megaesophagus. That means that whenever he would eat his food he would throw it back u because he couldn't digest it correctly. To keep him from getting sick every time he eats he would have to sit is a bailey-box, like a high chair for dogs, for half an hour, it was a lot of work.
The saddest part of his story is that because of this issue, nobody wanted to take him off of "Claire's' hands. She eventually had to resort to looking for a no-kill shelter to put him in. Unfortunately, there was not one shelter within 50 miles that would take him for more than a week. After that week was up, they'd put him down.
I know what you're thinking, "Rascal! Why didn't you just take the dog/?/". Well, I really wanted to, but we already had a dog, and my parents did not want to get another one, especially a sick dog.
"Claire" had to leave in just a few days, and was distraught over the thought of putting her little Scooter in a kill shelter. , and here's the happy part. My parents had a sudden change of heart, and we took in Scooter! he was an absolute disaster, but we loved him all the same. sadly, we didn't get to keep him. he still needed to find him a forever home. We searched and searched all over the United States for a good home, and after about six months, we found one.
Scooter now live in Ohio with a couple that run an in-home animal rescue center. He has brothers and sisters of all species, including cats, sugar-gliders, and lots of others. He even has a brother with the same megaesophagus issue! He is going on 9 years of life, and is living happily ever after, in a babies high chair instead of a bailey-box.
I will give this good boy a 50/10 for his struggles, and his love for people. Though he will eat up your slippers, then vomit them all over the carpet, you can't help but loving him.
